Workshop:  Independent Musicianship / Music Industry

3-5pm Sat 3 Sept, 2011

This workshop is funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) and is a Queensland Government and Townsville City Council partnership to support local arts and culture. This workshop is a QandA format where the audience (YOU) will be able talk to experts and to ask questions relating to the music industry.
There is plenty of good, local talent in Townsville and this workshop will give them an opportunity to learn better ways to be successful. The local musician Tabi Sari, with the support of Umbrella Studio and JCU, has organised for two internationally respected individuals to be available to answer questions on the 3rd of September. The two individuals are Ash Grunwald and Carl Gardiner.

Speaker 1: Ash Grunwald has independently developed a respectable career as a musician playing some of the largest festivals nationally, and he tours internationally regularly. His determination is irrepressible and inspiring! His application was rejected five years in arrow before finally being accepted on stage at the Blues n Roots Fest in Byron Bay. It’s a good example of setback, setback, setback, setback, setback and then bang… “Great! Let’s make this one count!”
Speaker 2: Carl Gardiner is the Managing Director of Mushroom Marketing, which is the Strategic Marketing arm of the Mushroom Group, Australia’s largest Independent Music Organisation. Working with business partner, Michael Gudinski, Carl has been involved in the success of some of the largest musical events and bands to rock Australia. In March 2009, both Carl Gardiner and Michael Gudinski were instrumental in the creation and success of Sound Relief which raised over $8million for charity. Carl continues to work with established artists as well as Corporate and Government clients, but also works on projects that support the ongoing development of emerging musicians and songwriters.
Speaker 3: Tabi Sari aka Paul Finn, is a local musician researching Independent Musicianship at JCU. His research aims to establish what is important when being a musician in the contemporary environment as a professional musician. He has a background in print media and was the front of a local band before becoming a solo musician. He has developed a national network of industry representatives and is keen to share his strategies for securing funding from sources such as RADF.

Why is this workshop timely? Think about where technology is taking the music industry. Technology has changed the landscape and the major labels are no longer as dominant. Now, success as a musician boils down to getting off your ass and doing it yourself! This is at the heart of what the workshop is all about.
