
The School of Creative Arts offers two degree programs, with a range of majors or specialisations. Both degrees are flexible so that students can create study plans around their interests and career aspirations.
Each degree include studies in the latest digital technologies, equipping graduates for a range of contemporary creative careers.
Bachelor of New Media Arts (Townsville campus)
This degree develops the knowledge and skills needed for contemporary creative arts practice where computer technologies are used. New Media Art is contemporary, cutting edge and innovative. It utilises new and next technologies and seeks to bring new forms of communication to and from the artist as practitioner.
The degree involves core studies that provide the theoretical grounding, context and knowledge needed to use current and emerging technologies in art making. You also complete a major where you can specialise in a practical way in an area of personal or professional interest. A minor study allows you to broaden your knowledge base and increase your competitiveness in the industry. Students complete a professional studies sequence that is designed to provide training and knowledge in career development and planning, networking, creative industries sector trends and development so they can create a demand for their creative outputs Majors include:

Bachelor of Creative Industries (Cairns campus)
This degree develops the knowledge and skills needed for contemporary creative arts practice within the context of the global sector known as the “creative industries”. This sector is driven by individuals with creative skills who in order to develop a meaningful career create a demand for their creative outputs. This requires that they have skills in creativity, communication and digital technologies. The Bachelor of Creative Industries involves training and development across these three core areas. Through selection of a Major and Minor field of study, students specialise in an area of choice, while maintaining flexibility and developing broad industry-oriented skills. One of the features of the program is the multi-disciplinary focus, including third year projects where students apply their individual discipline expertise within collaborative research and practice environments. Strong engagement with professional arts groups based in the local community e.g. JUTE theatre and Kick Arts is a feature of work-integrated learning opportunities made available to students enrolled in the degree. Diploma of Creative Arts (Townsville & Cairns campus)
This one-year program provides a foundation understanding in creative cultures, contexts and communication techniques. Students choose a range of creative arts subjects as a means to explore contemporary arts practice. The diploma suits school leavers who may not have received the necessary entry score for a degree program, mature-age students who are returning to study and not sure if they are ready for a full degree program or those already in the industry looking to upgrade their skills and/orgain formal qualifications.
Many students start out in the diploma and after six months of successful study, convert to a degree and count their studies towards the new program.
Dual Bachelor Degree (Townsville, Australia & Würzburg Germany)
Do you want to study for four years and obtain two degrees? Would you like to do this and also be immersed in the culture and traditions of Germany and Europe?
JCU has created a partnership with the University of Applied Sciences which enables students from the areas of Media Design, Photomedia or Illustration and Visual Media to study for four years and obtain two degrees:
Bachelor of New Media Arts (JCU) & Bachelor of Communication Design (FHWS)

Illustration and Visual Media
Essential Information:
Students wishing to undertake the Dual Bachelor program must notify the Head of School of their intention prior to commencing their second year of study at JCU. Please note that the dual degree program at Würzburg is not interchangeable with other single semester exchange programs off ered by JCU and FHWS.
